Vacationing in Cairo |
|
Of course, the most popular tourist destinations in Cairo are the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Everyone is familiar with the Pyramids, the only monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that remain standing to this day. However, you need to experience the Pyramids in person to understand just how large and impressive they are. While at the Pyramids, you can attend the Pyramids Sound and Light Show, climb inside one of the monstrous structures, take a ride on a horse or camel and visit the Temple of the Sphinx. If you have a flair for history, then you should head over to the Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian Museum is home to the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts and antiquities in the world, with over 120,000 items on display. The collection includes the remains of famous Pharaohs as well as the tomb of King Tutankhamun. For a true taste of Egyptian culture, you should visit the Birqash Camel Market, just 35 kilometers to the northwest of Cairo. The Birqash Camel Market is Egypt’s largest camel market, where hundreds of camels are sold daily. While you may not want to bring a camel home with you, it is an amazing experience to watch the locals barter over camels and other livestock. If you are interested in buying something besides a camel, you will find plentiful open-air markets in central Cairo, selling everything from souvenirs to clothes to fruit, vegetables and more. While in Cairo you won’t want to miss out on the delicious food. Introduce your palate to the flavors of Cairo’s Arabic and Middle Eastern cuisine. You will find food sold by street vendors all over the city, or you can head to a restaurant downtown. The Zamalek and Mohandiseen districts of Cairo are known for great restaurants. Keep in mind that if you visit Cairo during Ramadan many restaurants are closed during the day. Cairo, at the heart of Egypt, is an amazing place to visit; it’s full of culture, history and amazing attractions that are not to be missed!
