Traveling with children on the plane does not need to be a nightmare.
There are challenges that you might definitely need to overcome, but if you follow some of the tips below, it can be a relatively stress-free experience. Travel during non-peak travel time If possible, book your plane tickets when planes and airports are less crowded. That means during the earlier part of the week (Monday through Wednesday) and later at night (not too late, as your kids will be crabby). If you do have to flight out on the other days of the week, it’s better to schedule a Thursday or early Friday flight versus the weekend. Book seats towards the front of the plane Noise echoes forwards, so it’s best to book plane seats towards the front of the plane. Your kids can also move around more on the plane if there are less people in front to bother. It’s also a good idea to book a seat by the window, as the looking out at the view can keep them preoccupied. Tell them what to expect If they’ve never flown on a plane before, they might be anxious. Explain to your kids what will happen at the airport and during the flight. For instance, tell them that they will have to be checked by security, but it’s for everyone’s safety and it only takes a few minutes. Explain to them that they might experience pressure in their ears during take-off and landing, but that it’s only temporary. Let them know how long the flight will take and what meals they will receive. And let them ask you as many questions as they need to so that they feel more comfortable about flying. Bring gum and earplugs Taking off and landing can be painful even for adults. Take plenty of gum and earplugs for your kids and have them chew the gum or wear earplugs during these times. Bring plenty of entertainment Just like you would on a long trip in the car, bring plenty of games, CD’s, MP 4 players, books, magazines, etc. on the plane with you. Most airlines also carry a full selection of music options and videos to choose from.
