After exploring the past of this interesting country, visitors will enjoy hanging out on the modern Sri Lankan beaches.  Arugam Bay is one of the most popular beach villages and is a great place for surfing and wildlife watching alike.  There are also a number of beach resort villages in Sri Lanka for travelers looking to relax in the sun and lie on the sandy beaches all day.  Unawatuna and Mirissa beaches in the south are favorites among many travelers.
Looking to get out into the wild?  Yala National Park is an amazing wildlife reserve filled with elephants, reptiles and birds.  One of the most exciting opportunities that Yala National Park gives its visitors is the chance to spot the elusive leopard.  The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is also great for spotting wild animals and the 22 villages surrounding the forest are interesting to wander through and get a taste of Sri Lankan life.  There is also great hiking with a mix of interesting plant and animal life in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country.
Sri Lankan cuisine can best be described as a delicious take on South Indian food. Curry, coconut and red chili powder are staple ingredients.  Of course, seafood is popular as well, as Sri Lanka is an island, and many restaurants offer prawns and cuttlefish.  Kottu Roti is one of the most popular dishes - a mix of chopped roti, vegetables and meat - and don’t leave the island without giving it a try.  The city of Colombo is one of the best places to eat, as it has a number of fine restaurants and 5 star hotels that offer a unique mix of local and International food.
