French Bulldogs and Great Eats

Gourmet enthusiasts travel the world in search of the perfect meal.

If you happen to be one of those discerning epicureans, search no more for in the small town of Roses El Bulli awaits.

Along the coast of Catalonia just two hours north of the city of Barcelona, a homeopathy doctor and his wife started what was to become the legendary “El Bulli” restaurant.  Named after their beloved pet of French bulldog descent, this posh eatery became the recipient of accolades and merits.

And when in the capable hands of acclaimed Chef Ferran Adria, it won the stature of “best restaurant in the world.”  His specialty of “molecular gastronomy” made it what it is today and his culinary innovations remain a staple in many kitchens throughout the continent.

To be one of the lucky diners you must get your reservation in early as El Bulli only takes fifty bookings a night.  But beware of the fact it’s filled almost one year in advance.

If you’re wondering what molecular cooking entails, it’s a unique form of food creation by experimenting with different chemical processes.  A prime example is the chef’s invention of “culinary foam” which consists of diverse flavors converted into a gel that’s pumped out of a canister.  It sounds perplexing but the results are unusually appealing dishes that are sheer candy for the eyes.  For such innovations, Chef Adria is known as the “Salvador Dali of the Kitchen” and his techniques fascinate talented colleagues around the globe.

When deciding what to eat, you may opt for the thirty-five course taster’s delight or choose from the a la carte menu.  Among the specialties don’t miss the delicious starters such as oysters with pancetta, frozen polenta or toasted bread with tomato surprise.  On the long list of entrees, the rabbit with fruit jelly, sardines with Roe and trout tempura are the favorite of many.  But leaving room for dessert is a must.  With a menu that features works of art like “crocant Gaudi,” strawberries filled with sorbet of soft cheese and pear sherbet with chocolate and eucalyptus, you won’t know whether to savor them or photograph them.

At El Bulli, you’ll experience a meal that surpasses all expectations.
