For Women on the Go

If you’re a woman who enjoys traveling, but is afraid to discover the world’s most exciting or remote destinations alone, set your worries aside. 

 By implementing a few simple common sense rules, you can feel free to discover and explore what the world has to offer.

Begin by deciding where you want to go.  As you’ve probably heard, “knowledge is power,” and that’s certainly true in travel.  So avail yourself of literature that explains the cultural make-up of your chosen destination.  Find out about the people’s customs, what place do women occupy in their society, how they dress, act, etc.  If possible, find other women who’ve been there before.  Ask them about their experiences and to share a few tips.   

Contact your bank to inform them of any impending travel plans.  This will save you from encountering problems when trying to use the credit cards abroad.  It’s important to let them know if you’ll be shopping in India for instance.    

Try to arrive at your location during the day in order to become familiar with the area.  And upon getting there, be aware of your surroundings.  Sure you’re on vacation to relax, but being safe is crucial.  Observe what others are wearing and how they behave in public.  As you’ll find out from reading and circling the globe, there are cultures where direct eye contact with females is forbidden. 

Opt for the guided tours and spend time with larger groups whenever possible, especially if intending to go out at night.  Avoid certain behaviors that you consider normal.  Smoking in public or sipping cocktails alone might be a way to attract trouble. 

When exploring the sites, wear the appropriate clothes.  Keep your money in a safe place, like perhaps beneath your shirt.  Maintain a copy of your passport with you at all times, leaving the original in the hotel’s safe.   

Staying healthy is also important.  Check the Internet for information regarding vaccines.  Keep prescription medications in your carry-on luggage, and bring extras in the event you’re trip is extended.  Should you fall ill and need a physician, contact the embassy for recommendations.  

If you’re alert and respectful of others customs, you’ll come home with nothing but pleasant memories.
